NEWS Merthyr Town FC < Back News (News-Item) Southport (A) Preview 23 January 2026 It's time for another matchday in the Enterprise National League North and the Martyrs travel away to Southport for matchday 28. Last time out Paul Michael's side continued their impressive run as a clinical Lewys Twamley performance and brace clinched the 3 points and a 2-0 win over Peterborough Sports. For the host Southport, their last fixture saw 'The Sandgrounders' travel away to South Shields for a midweek fixture which resulted in a narrow 1-0 defeat and Southport now find themselves in 19th place. PREVIOUS ENCOUNTER: The previous encounters between the two side came on the opening day of the 2025/26 season. It was a cagey affair for the most part, but it was Lewys Twamley who opened the scoring in the 82nd minute on his return to Penydarren Park. In the final minutes of the tie, the Martyrs managed to withstand the pressure that Southport applied to try and grab an equaliser and a swift counterattack saw substitute Morgan Lewis fire home to double Merthyr's lead and claim the win on the opening day of the season. KNOW YOUR OPPONENT | KEY STAFF Manager | Neil Danns Neil Danns was appointed as manager of Southport FC in May 2025 following a 2-year spell as Assistant Manager of Tranmere Rovers. Prior to management Danns had a successful playing career that started in the youth ranks of Blackburn Rovers. Neil Danns achieved his senior debut for Blackburn as manager Graeme Souness started the midfielder in a UEFA Cup fixture against CSKA Sofia. Following his debut game Danns only made another 3 appearances for Blackburn and his time there was interrupted with multiple loan moves as he had short stints at Blackpool, Hartlepool and Colchester United. Following a successful loan at Colchester, Danns made the decision to permanently sign for Colchester where he went on to make 63 appearances for the club between 2004 and 2006. The next move in Danns' career was in 2006 as he departed Colchester United and signed for Birmingham City. Danns spent 2 years at 'The Blues' and he made 31 appearances before the expiration of his contract, and he headed for Crystal Palace. During Dann's 3 years at Crystal Palace, he played over a century of games while also scoring 18. In 2011 Danns decided not to renew his contract at Crystal Palace, and he made the decision to sign for Leicester City. However, his time at Leicester was heavily influenced by loan transfers as he made 3 loan transfers to Bristol City, Huddersfield Town and Bolton Wanderers during his 3-year contract at Leicester. Due to the lack of game time allowed by the Leicester manager for Danns, he decided to make the permanent switch to Bolton Wanderers in 2014 after a brief loan spell at the club. Compared to his time at Leicester, his 2 years at Bolton was a successful one as the Midfielder played 73 times for the club in which he scored just 3 goals. Then in 2016 Danns decided that it was time for another change of clubs as he signed for Bury FC. Despite his time at Bury going well, off field struggles for the club resulted in Bury being expelled for the Football League and Danns had no choice but to become a free agent in 2019. Following Danns' departure from Bury it was Tranmere Rovers managed to sign Danns and his time there was short lived as he made just 18 appearances for the club and he made the decision to leave in 2020. The final years of his playing career saw Danns play for multiple clubs such as Radcliffe, Halifax Town, Connah's Quay and Macclesfield before he mad ethe step into management. Neil Danns' first step into coaching and management was during the 2022/23 season as he spent half the year as interim player-manager at Macclesfield in which he guided the club to promotion from the Norther Premier League Division One West. Following his successful stint as manager at Macclesfield Danns accepted an offer to become Assistant manager at Tranmere Rovers where he spent the next 2 years of his career. Following a 2-year spell as assistant manager of Tranmere Rovers, Danns was appointed manager of Southport in May 2025 shortly after the conclusion of the 2024/25 season. KNOW YOUR OPPONENT | SEASON SO FAR Since the opening day defeat against Merthyr, Southport's campaign has been a poor one which sees them involved in a fight for survival. However, Southport instantly bounced back from the defeat at Penydarren Park they hosted Bedford Town and won 3-1 after goals from Danny Lloyd-McGoldrick, Tom Moore and Sonny Hilton. Despite the positive result, the next 7 games saw Neil Danns' side pick up only 1 point as they lost 6 of their next 7 league fixtures which included defeats against the likes of Macclesfield, Leamington and Worksop Town. The long wait for a second win of the season for Southport was brought to a stop as on the 18th of October they travelled away to Oxford City and picked up a narrow but vital 2-1 win after goals from Adrien Thibaut and Jordan Slew. 'The Sandgrounders' then had to wait another 5 games for a victory as they defeated Buxton 2-1 away from home after a spell of 2 draws and 2 loses from their last 4 games prior. The away victory seemed to be a confidence booster for Southport as they won their next game at Hereford 2-1, and they then went on an unbeaten run of 6 games in which they drew 5 times and won once. Neil Danns' side has been in some poor league form prior to the clash with Merthyr as the Southport have lost 3, drew 1 and won once in their previous 5 games. The last fixture for Southport resulted in a narrow defeat as they travelled to league leaders South Shields on Tuesday night and lost 1-0 with the only goal of the night coming in the 83rd minute. The top goalscorer for Neil Danns' side so far this season is attacker Jordan Slew who has scored 7 goals so far. NEWS Merthyr Town FC < Back News (News-Item) Alfreton Town (A) Match Preview 19 February 2026 After returning to winning ways in a dominant 7-1 victory over Bedford Town, the Martyrs travel away to relegation battling Alfreton Town for matchday 34 in the Enterprise National League North. Alfreton Town find themselves embroiled in a fight for survival at the bottom of the table, as they sit in 22nd place on 26 points - 7 points off survival. In their last fixture 'The Reds' travelled away to AFC Fylde and were defeated 3-0 on the day after a first half brace from Danny Ormerod and an own goal from defender Nathan Newall. Previous Encounters: The last fixture between Merthyr and Alfreton was an absolute thriller with goals galore. Alfreton Town took an early lead at Penydarren Park through goals from Mark Beck and Siyabonga Ligendza within 12 minutes. However, the Martyrs brought themselves back level on the brink of half time after Cole Jarvis struck in the 34th minute which was swiftly followed up by a goal from Ricardo Rees to make it 2-2 at the interval. Paul Michael's side dominated the second half with another goal from Cole Jarvis, a goal from Lewys Twamley, partnered with Ricardo Rees completing his hattrick, which was enough to seal a 6-2 victory over 'The Reds' at Penydarren Park. KNOW YOUR OPPONENT | KEY STAFF Manager | Jake Buxton Manager Jake Buxton was appointed as manager in October 2025 following a disappointing start to the 2025/26 campaign for 'The Reds'. His playing career started at Mansfield Town in 2002, and Buxton stayed there for 6 years making 151 appearances for the side in which he scored 5 goals. During his 6-year spell at Mansfield Town, he departed the club and headed to Alfreton Town on a short-term loan in 2003 where he played 5 games for 'The Reds'. At the end of the 2007/2008 season Mansfield Town were relegated to the Conference Division (National League) and it was then that Buxton made the decision to finally depart Mansfield and sign for Burton Albion in August of 2008. Jake Buxton only spent one season at the club but in that time, he played a crucial role in the team as he helped guide the 'Brewers' to promotion from the Conference National (National League). During the title winning season, Buxton won the club's annual player of the year award and attracted lots of interest from football league club. After an impressive season with Burton Albion Jake Buxton earned himself a one-year contract with championship side Derby County who at the time were managed by Nigel Clough. Buxton had a long and successful time at Derby County as he played there between the years if 2009 and 2016, making 139 appearances and scoring 11 goals for 'The Rams'. Following a long spell at Derby County, in July 2016 Jake Buxton signed for recently promoted side Wigan Athletic on a 3-year contract. Despite making 39 appearances for Wigan in his opening season with the club, Buxton mutually decided to terminate his contract to make the move back to Nottinghamshire. Just one week after departing Wigan, Jake Buxton re-signed for Burton Albion where he spent the last 3 years of his playing career up until 2020. In May 2020, Jake Buxton was appointed as player-manager for Burton Albion following the resignation of previous manager Nigel Clough. Despite this, in December 2020 Buxton was sacked after a poor run of form which saw the 'Brewers' pick up 2 wins in just 21 league games. After leaving Burton Albion, Jake Buxton started work in the Derby County Academy in the role of Professional Development Phase Coach. In October 2022, Buxton took the step up and became the clubs lead under-18s coach and ahead pf the 2023/24 season, Buxton was appointed as Derby County's lead under-21s coach. Then in February 2025, Jake Buxton worked as an assistant head coach to assist caretaker Manager Matt Hamshaw. After a short spell as assistant head coach, Jake Buxton was assigned the role of Senior Transition Coach for Derby County's first team, a role where he would support players make the transition from academy football to first-team football. Then in October 2025, just 4 months after taking he role at Derby County, Jake Buxton was appointed as first team manager of Alfreton Town with the task of steering the club away from the relegation zone in the Enterprise National League North. KNOW YOUR OPPONENT | SEASON SO FAR Since the clash at Penydarren Park, Jake Buxton's side have struggled to pick up many valuable results with the side only winning 2 games since. Their poor run of results after being defeated by Merthyr started away at Scarborough Athletic where they managed to hold the playoff hopefuls to a goalless draw. However, in the following game, Alfreton travelled to Manchester to clash with Curzon Ashton. 'The Reds' faced late heartbreak on the day as an injury time goal from Bradley Holmes was enough to claim the 3 points for Curzon Ashton and send Alfreton Town home empty handed. In the two league games following this result, Alfreton faced both Southport and Worksop Town. Unfortunately for them, Jake Buxton's side only managed to claim 1 point in these games as they drew at home with Southport and lost 1-0 away from home against Worksop. In their final game of 2025, Alfreton managed to pick a long-awaited victory as they defeated Leamington 2-1 at home, following goals from Mark Beck and Lewis Salmon. Despite the victory, the next 2 games saw them return to previous form as they were defeated by both Darlington 3-1, and Bedford Town 2-1. In the 3 games prior to hosting Merthyr Town, 'The Reds' have had a decent run of results for their season which has seen them pick up 4 points from a possible 9 after they defeated King's Lynn Town 2-0 away from home, while they drew away at Chester 2-2 before their most recent match where they lost 3-0 away to AFC Fylde. The top goal scorers for Alfreton so far this 2025/26 league season are Billy Fewster and Siyabonga Ligendza who have both scored 4 times for Alfreton this season. - KIDDERMINSTER HARRIERS v Merthyr Town FC | Merthyr Town Footbal
< Back National League North Tuesday, 10 February 2026 19:45PM KIDDERMINSTER HARRIERS v Merthyr Town FC 0-0 10th February 2026 National League North - Matchday 32 Attendance 2,414 (Merthyr 187) Kidderminster Harriers 0 vs 0 Merthyr Town A great battling defensive performance secured a hard fought draw for Merthyr Town at Kidderminster Harriers backed by 187 Martyrs who made the short hop up to Aggborough. Paul Michael made three changes following the defeat against Chorley, with Jay Williams, Cawley Cox and the returning Will Spiers step into the starting XI for Matty Harris, Kiban Rai and Tom Handley. The Harriers showed their early intent with pinpoint crosses from out wide and should have taken the lead in the 4th minute, when Reynolds whipped in a ball to Davis inside the 5 yard area but his attempt at a volley went back to where it came from. Reynolds and Kalambayi went close shortly afterwards and it felt like this was going to be a long day. The Martyrs started to settle after this flurry of pressure, with Cox testing Dibble from the left before the Spiers was back to his attacking best, driving from his RB position straight through the middle and putting the defence on the back foot. The home side continued to look dangerous with pinpoint delivery out wide from both Walker and Devine, which meant Williams and Ryan-Phillips were under increasing pressure. Merthyr’s first real chance came midway through the first half, with Twamley picking up a loose ball from the left hand side and driving to the edge of the area but was unable to beat Dibble. The game continued to open up with Maddox firing high and wide, before Walker beat Smerdon for pace to slide in a dangerous ball that was cut out by Ryan-Phillips. The first real flashpoint came just before the break after Davis collided into Cogman whilst challenging for the ball. Cogman stayed down with what seemed like a shoulder injury, but was soon gingerly on his feet - with the away fans hopeful that it wasn’t serious. As the half came to a close, Obi used his (massive) height advantage to beat Evans to the ball from a dangerous corner but was unable to keep his header down. A solid first half from the Martyrs who had created chances, but also defended solidly especially against the high ball. It was Kidderminster who were straight out of the blocks as they continued to pound Cogman with ball after ball from out wide. Garrick had a golden chance to open the scoring on 53 minutes. The energetic Twamley picked up a loose ball in the middle of the park, before driving forward to then play through Garrick. Garrick’s quick touch allowed him to drive a low shot which was heading to the bottom right corner in front of the away fans, but Dibble was able to get a toe to the ball and deflect wide - a great save. Just after the hour mark the Harriers had the ball in the net direct from a corner but the referee had judged there to be a foul in the build up, much to Merthyr's relief. With 25 minutes remaining Twamley was picked out by K. Evans, took the ball to the byline before cutting back inside Davis. His chip to the back post found Cox in space, but he was unable to get the contact needed much to his frustration and the ball went wide. Kidderminster continued to push for the opener with Kalambayi again going close but pushed his shot wide of the post, before Davis almost won it in injury time but was unable to guide Kandola’s cross on target. For a 0 - 0 draw it was a very entertaining game between two playoff rivals. A huge defensive display from the Martyrs which not only ends four defeats on the bounce, but will no doubt breathe some belief (if it was even needed) back into the squad. Cogman playing the best part of 60 minutes with a potential shoulder injury along with the return of Spiers at his attacking best were my personal highlights of a great away trip. Another quick turnaround as Bedford visit Penydarren Park on Saturday. Gavin Burns Previous Next
