NEWS Merthyr Town FC < Back News (News-Title) Jay Williams signs! 29 August 2024 Merthyr Town Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of defender, Jay Williams from National League side, Sutton United, on loan until 7th January 2025. Jay, who is a Merthyr boy, and son of former Merthyr Town player and manager, Gavin Williams, came through the academy system at Newport County before joining Fulham in the summer of 2019 as a 16-year-old. Jay, who is a centre-back and also comfortable at full-back, spent just over four years with the Premier League side featuring over 50 times for their U18s and U21s and played a key role in their Premier League Cup winning campaign, before signing for then League Two side, Sutton United in January 2024. Jay has also been capped 13 times at U16 through to U21 level for Wales, last featuring in the UEFA Under-21 European Championship Qualifiers in October 2023. Speaking on securing the loan deal for Jay, Paul Michael said, “Jay’s a supremely talented player, a local boy and someone who already knows a few of our current players from Wales age-grade squads, and Newport County, so I have no doubt he will settle in very quickly. It is a fantastic signing for us, with Jay having played so many games in the Premier League 2 competition for Fulham, and we are delighted to give Jay another platform in senior football, and I am sure he’ll help us achieve our goals over at least the first half of the season. Thank you to Jay and Sutton United for trusting us with the next small part of his development.” Jay’s loan transfer will be subject to FAW and FA approval, and we would like to thank Sutton United for their assistance throughout the transfer. NEWS Merthyr Town FC < Back News (News-Item) Match Sponsor - Dorchester Town 19 January 2024 This weekends match has very kindly been sponsored in the name of 'Andy's Man Club, Merthyr' by an extremely genorous gesture by Magpies Chairman Scott Symes, in memory of Ceri Collins. Scott explained: “A good friend of mine Tim Beavis, an ex-DTFC director, bought this situation to my attention last year and helping in anyway to raise awareness of this story, and men’s mental health in general, is something all the non-league football family should try and help by raising awareness and funds when we can.” Tim - who is good friends with Ceri’s parents Mark and Madeleine - added the following: Mark Collins is Merthyr through and through, he and his wife Madeleine are regular visitors to not just Penydarren Park but as many of the away matches they can attend also. October 18th 2022, Mark and Madeleine’s lives changed forever. Their son Ceri, the life and soul of the party, a singer, entertainer, and all-round wonderful person, died by suicide. Ceri was a talented musician and songwriter, along with being not a bad footballer in his own right. Mark claims to have been ‘pretty good’ too, having played for Merthyr. Since that sad day, Mark and Madeleine have been huge advocates of mental health for men and done as much as they can to encourage men to talk and seek help. Luke, Ceri’s brother (and they were each other’s heroes it’s safe to say) has even climbed Pen Y Fan to raise money for Andy’s Man Club which helps men with mental health problems. Luke by the way has profound autism, so that was a monumental effort on his part! Mark has been very candid, honest, and selfless in his efforts to prevent other parents from suffering the same loss that the Collins family have suffered. He has been a guest on ‘Just One Man’ podcast’, organised numerous events to raise funds for Andy’s Man Club Merthyr, to continue to help men of any age with their mental health. Apparently, Mark is up too early planning his next fundraiser, whilst Madeleine admits to not being a morning person! Sadly, Mark and Madeleine can’t be at the game today, they are being the best Grandparents to Jesse, Ceri’s young son. But they are here in spirit and without doubt, Mark will be ‘encouraging’ his beloved Merthyr from afar. Previous Next

Speaking after the deal was finalised, Paul Michael said: “Lewis has had no pre-season, he’s done one full training session with the team in nine weeks, he feels, and I agree, the best way for him to get up to full speed and feeling sharp is to go out and play games for a period of time to get up and running”. < Back Merthyr Town v Gosport Borough 23 September 2023 Next Previous Kick Off: 15:00 1-4 Result: Merthyr Town FC, Penydarren Park, Merthyr Tydfil, CF47 8RF Match Report: In the opening stages the Martyrs were by far the better team and the performance had the perfect start. In just the 2nd minute of the game, Olly Mehew broke down the left inside channel cutting the ball back across the penalty area to present the perfect chance for Ricardo Rees to side foot home from two yards. The sliding doors moment of the game came in the 17th minute. Kieran Evans was injured on the right touchline and after lengthy treatment was forced to retire, to be replaced by Tom Stokes. In the very next phase of play Aneurin Livermore, in an attempt to win back possession of the ball that he had initially lost, was shown a red card and the home side were reduced to ten men for the remaining 73 minutes of the game. Gosport took full advantage of the disruption caused by the two incidents and equalised immediately when Alex Barsa turned a free kick past Jamie Cogman at the near post. As the home side regained their composure they almost restored their lead when Olly Mehew hit the inside of the post and the ball ran across the goal line before being desperately cleared. This let off allowed Gosport to score just before half time when Barsa’s header looped over the stranded Cogman. Losing 2-1 and down to ten men, from that moment onwards everyone could see where this was going. It was a valiant attempt to claw their way back into the game that saw Tom Handley push forward on the hour mark, as Bradley Tarbuck exploited the space left by the full back to race into the penalty area and squeeze the ball between Cogman and the near post. In a vain attempt to rescue the game the Martyrs were caught on the counter attack in the fifth minute of added time as substitute Jonathan Efedje broke clear from half way to beat Cogman unopposed. Suffering a second home defeat in 2023/24 so far, we are now without Callum Ryan-Phillips, Frazer Thomas, possibly Kieran Evans and soon Aneurin Livermore will also join those missing - key individuals. This particular nightmare will hopefully just feel like a bad dream if we get good results in our next few games. So, a very disappointing day, one from which we’ll have more regrets than anything else at what could have been. Previous Next
