NEWS Merthyr Town FC < Back News (News-Item) FA Cup Preview | Merthyr Town vs. Taunton Town 15 September 2023 Merthyr Town continue their Emirates FA Cup campaign against National League South side Taunton Town on Friday Night (7.45pm). The Martyrs face the Peacocks in an enthralling encounter as both sides aim to reach their First Round heights achieved last season. OPPOSITION FOCUS | IN THE DUGOUT Rob Dray joined the club in the summer of 2016, being appointed to the backroom team as coach. He has a wealth of experience in the non-league game, originally being a player and manager of Bridgwater Town Reserves in the Somerset County League. He stepped up to manage Bridgwater Town’s first team at the start of the 2010-11 season but a poor run of results saw his departure from Fairfax Park in March 2012 before he became assistant manager to Sean Joyce at Southern Premier new boys Bideford in the summer of that year. After three seasons in North Devon, he left to have a short spell at Yate Town in 2015 but took a break from the game for the majority of the 2015-16 season. Upon joining the Peacocks, he became part of the successful management team that guided the team to the FA Cup 1st Round Proper and the Southern League West Division title in consecutive seasons. He then assumed the role of interim manager in September 2018 following the departure of Leigh Robinson before being appointed Head of Football a month later, leading the Peacocks to a tremendous second-place finish in their first-ever season at Southern Premier level. After two seasons curtailed due to Covid, he achieved his finest moment when guiding the Peacocks to the Southern Premier South title in 2021, a feat which earned promotion to the National League South for the first time in the club’s history. Despite a crippling injury list, he steered the club to a highly respectable 14th place finish in their debut season. OPPOSITION FOCUS | SEASON SO FAR The Peacocks have enjoyed a strong start to the National League South season winning five of their opening nine league games. Goals from Nick Grimes and Ross Stearn guided Dray’s side to an opening-day win against Braintree Town on 5 August. Since then the Peacocks have gained wins against Welling United, ST Albans and most recently Tonbridge Angels. The away side currently sit fifth in the league table on 14 points having scored 16 goals so far. OPPOSITION FOCUS | KEY PLAYER Ross Stearn is a vastly experienced goalscoring midfielder who joined the Peacocks in November 2021 after being released from Chippenham Town due to financial constraints. He began his career at Bristol City before leaving to join Forest Green Rovers in the summer of 2009 for a brief spell. He then signed for Weston-super-Mare in September 2009 until switching to Almondsbury Town at the start of 2010. A move to Chippenham Town followed in the summer of 2011 and Stearn then spent the following season back at Weston-super-Mare. He then signed for Bath City ahead of the 2013-14 season, spending two years at Twerton Park where he registered 28 goals, before linking up with National League South side Sutton United in the summer of 2015 where he helped them win promotion. Ross then departed to join Eastleigh in November 2016 for a year until returning to Sutton towards the end of 2017. He spent a loan period at Bath City in the early part of 2018 before signing permanently for City again in the 2018 close season, enjoying another two seasons with Bath until joining Chippenham in the summer of 2020. He finished as the club’s second-highest goalscorer in 2022-23 which included the first ever Peacocks’ hat trick in the National League. Jay, who is a Merthyr boy, and son of former Merthyr Town player and manager, Gavin Williams, came through the academy system at Newport County before joining Fulham in the summer of 2019 as a 16-year-old. Jay, who is a centre-back and also comfortable at full-back, spent just over four years with the Premier League side featuring over 50 times for their U18s and U21s and played a key role in their Premier League Cup winning campaign, before signing for then League Two side, Sutton United in January 2024. Jay has also been capped 13 times at U16 through to U21 level for Wales, last featuring in the UEFA Under-21 European Championship Qualifiers in October 2023. Speaking on securing the loan deal for Jay, Paul Michael said, “Jay’s a supremely talented player, a local boy and someone who already knows a few of our current players from Wales age-grade squads, and Newport County, so I have no doubt he will settle in very quickly. It is a fantastic signing for us, with Jay having played so many games in the Premier League 2 competition for Fulham, and we are delighted to give Jay another platform in senior football, and I am sure he’ll help us achieve our goals over at least the first half of the season. Thank you to Jay and Sutton United for trusting us with the next small part of his development.” Jay’s loan transfer will be subject to FAW and FA approval, and we would like to thank Sutton United for their assistance throughout the transfer. NEWS Merthyr Town FC < Back News (News-Title) Green Flag flying at Merthyr Town Football Club 18 July 2023 Environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy has unveiled this year’s Green Flag Award winners – the international mark of a quality park or green space. We are delighted to announce that our Remembrance and Well-Being garden has achieved the coveted Green Flag Community Award in recognition of its high environmental standards, cleanliness, safety and community involvement. Originally the location for the garden was overgrown and unused, it has improved the visual and aesthetic nature of this piece of land, that is now used as a place for reflection as well as remembrance. The land is in an elevated position and provides spectacular views of the surrounding mountainside and neighbourhoods. The project includes pathways, benches, planting, shrubs, bird and bat boxes, wild flowers, a water feature and is supported by a number of other community organisations. We would also like to thank the local contractors who were involved in the project. Our Club Chaplain, David Powell said “This award provides signifiant recognition for all of the hard work carried out by our dedicated group of volunteers. We hope that the presence of the garden in our urban landscape will provide a green space for members of the local community to reflect and enjoy being in a well maintained, local open space.” 180 community managed green spaces across the country have met the high standards needed to receive the Green Flag Community Award. Now in its third decade, Green Flag recognises well-managed parks and green spaces in 20 countries around the world. In Wales, the awards scheme is run by Keep Wales Tidy. Lucy Prisk, Green Flag Coordinator for Keep Wales Tidy said “Free access to safe, high quality green space has never been more important. Our award-winning sites play a vital role in people’s mental and physical well-being, providing a haven for communities to come together, relax and enjoy nature. News that a record number of community managed green spaces in Wales have achieved Green Flag status is testament to the dedication and hard work of hundreds of volunteers. We’re delighted to be able to celebrate their success on the world stage.” A full list of award winners can be found on the Keep Wales Tidy website ww.keepwalestidy.cymru Previous Next

NEWS Merthyr Town FC < Back News (News-Title) Olly Mehew signs for Merthyr Town FC 2 June 2023 Merthyr Town Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Olly Mehew from Weston Super Mare AFC ahead of the 2023/24 season. The 25-year-old is capable of playing through the middle of the attack as a No.9, on either flank as a winger or as a No.10, making him an exciting addition ahead of the new campaign. Olly began his career coming through the ranks at Bristol Rovers before joining the Blackburn Rovers U18s set-up at the age of 16. Olly then returned to the Gas briefly, before moving to Forest Green Rovers; during his time at Forest Green, Olly had a host of loan spells including time at Salisbury FC, Taunton Town, Dorchester Town and Bath City. More recently Olly made over 135 appearances for Yate Town, scoring 45 goals and assisting 25 times. In October 2022, Mehew moved to Tiverton Town, before then joining Weston Super Mare in February 2023, playing a key role in the run-in to become League Champions. Speaking after the deal was confirmed, manager Paul Michael said: “I’ve obviously worked with Olly before at Yate and I’m a huge admirer of him. Last season out of respect for Yate we initially only approached the Welsh lads Ric & Ange but obviously he’s gone on to Weston at the back end of the season, scored some important goals, played an impressive role in their success and now it’s about getting the best team possible on the pitch for Merthyr Town. This summer we wanted to add players who can improve us and I believe with Tom & now Olly we are doing that. “The supporters can look forward to his electric pace, he can beat players inside or outside and he wants to get in behind, there was a goal he scored for Weston where he played as a 9 against Dorchester, as soon as he got it to feet he dropped it off first time so he could get in behind. We need to stretch teams in behind more rather than playing in front of them and Olly can do that from any of the front four positions.” About Olly The striker started in the Bristol Rovers Academy and progressed through the youth ranks, before signing for Championship side Blackburn Rovers in August 2014 and linking up with their under-18s at the age of 16. Olly returned to Bristol Rovers in August 2015 as a second-year scholar, becoming a part of the under-18s side at The Memorial Stadium. In March 2016, he gained his first exposure to senior football on loan with Southern League Division One South & West side Mangotsfield United, scoring three goals and assisting one in four appearances. In March 2016, he joined Southern League Division One South & West side Shortwood United on loan until the end of the season, scoring two goals and assisting three in 10 games. Olly departed Bristol Rovers at the age of 18 in the summer of 2016 following the end of his scholarship, and was quickly snapped up by National League side Forest Green Rovers in June 2016. He returned to Southern League Division One South & West side Mangotsfield United in August 2016, scoring one and assisting two in four games. The forward then joined Southern League Division One South & West club Salisbury FC on a three-month loan in September 2016, scoring six goals and assisting four in six games while being an unused substitute four times. He was recalled by Forest Green Rovers six weeks into his Salisbury loan and immediately loaned out to Southern League Division One South & West side Mangotsfield United on a month’s loan in October 2016, which was then extended for an additional month in November. During his third spell at the Mangoes, he scored four and assisted four in eight games. In January 2017, he signed for Southern League Premier Division club Cirencester Town on a month’s loan, making three appearances and being an unused substitute once. The striker moved on loan again in February 2017, this time to Southern League Premier Division club Dorchester Town for a month where he scored three goals and assisted one in seven games. The striker then spent the rest of the season back with Forest Green Rovers, making his debut as a substitute in the National League away at York City on the final day of the 2016-2017 season. The next season, Olly joined Southern League Division One South & West club Taunton Town in August 2017 on loan until the New Year. He made five appearances and scored one goal under Leigh Robinson before being recalled early by FGR in September. In January 2018, he joined Southern League Division One South & West team Salisbury FC on a one-month loan for a second time, scoring four goals in six games. He joined Southern League Division One South & West team Bideford on a one-month loan in February 2018, playing four games in North Devon. In March 2018, he joined Southern League Division One South & West team Evesham United on loan until the end of the season. While at Evesham, he helped the club reach the league Playoffs where they lost out in the semi-finals to Swindon Supermarine. During his short spell in Worcestershire, he scored two goals in eight appearances. Olly’s two-year spell with Forest Green came to an end when he departed the club in the summer of 2018, and spent part of the summer on trial with National League South side Bath City. He opted to sign for Southern League Division One South side Yate Town in the summer of 2018 however, being part of the Bluebells squad that gained promotion from the league via the playoffs in 2019 which included two goals in the final against Cinderford Town. During his time at the club, he scored 23 goals and assisted three in 67 games, being an unused substitute twice. In November 2019, he moved on to Southern League Division One South side Bristol Manor Farm, scoring one goal in 15 games under Lee Lashenko. Olly returned to Southern League Premier South side Yate Town in the summer of 2020, leading the line effectively as Yate achieved their highest league ranking with a 7th-placed finish in 2021-2022 as well as helping them reach the FA Cup First Round in the same season and achieving silverware in the Gloucestershire Senior Cup. During his second spell at Yate, he made 72 appearances and was an unused substitute twice, scoring 22 goals and assisting 21. In October 2022, he signed for Southern League Premier South side Tiverton Town on a permanent basis, making 13 appearances and assisting three goals during his three months at The Ian Moorcroft Stadium. Everyone at Merthyr Town is delighted to welcome Olly to the club. Previous Next
