On Saturday 13th April 2024, Merthyr Town Football Club are delighted to announce that the historic main stand covering the poplar terracing will be officially renamed the 'Anthony Hughes Stand' in recognition of Anthony’s unique contribution to the football club.

The renaming ceremony will take place prior to kick off in the game against Hendon, which is the Martyrs penultimate home game of the 2023/24 season. Everyone involved with Merthyr Town Football Club and the wider community of Non-League Football was incredibly saddened to hear of Anthony’s passing in January 2024, so as a club we are delighted to be able to remember Anthony is this fitting and lasting way, as we say thank you to Anthony and his family for his service to Merthyr Town Football Club across multiple roles for over 30 years.

We will be delighted to be joined by Anthony's immediate family, friends and a number of Board members from the Southern League, which Anthony was Chairman of up until January 2024, at the club on Saturday for the renaming ceremony and the game.

We hope as many supporters as possible can join us for the naming ceremony which will take place approximately at 14:30-14:45 on Saturday. Also ahead of kick off, there will be a minutes applause as we remember Anthony, and celebrate his life with the renaming of the stand.
