Report: Merthyr Town 1-3 AFC Totton
11 November 2023
Merthyr Town's unfortunate run of results continued as they fell to a 1-3 defeat to AFC Totton at Penydarren Park.
A goal from Lewis Powell was not enough to secure any points as a Joesph Turner double and a penalty from captain Scott Rendell meant the points would be going to the south coast side.
The match could only be described as tight for the opening half hour as both sides struggling to create and clear-cut chances. Frazer Thomas coming closest with a shot going just over the bar.
However, the first goal of the match would go to the away side with debutant Turner driving a low shot past Martyrs goalkeeper Jaime Cogman.
The Martyrs responded almost immediately to going a goal down as they drew level less than 3 minutes later.
Good work down the wing from Oliver Mehew meant that Powell had the easiest of finishes and also meaning that the sides would be level going into the halftime break.
Merthyr struggled to create any more clear-cut chances after the break with Totton taking full advantage.
This came in the form of another goal, with Turner again popping up to finish after a defensive mix-up between Cogman and Noah Smerdon.
A penalty deep into added on time from Totton captain Rendell would secure all 3 points for the away side.
The Martyrs will be looking to improve and get a result next time out as they travel to Harrow Borough next weekend.
