Kerry Morgan Departs
3 July 2024
Merthyr Town Football Club can confirm that after 11 seasons, Kerry Morgan will leave after making his final appearance this Saturday in the pre-season fixture against Carlton Town.
Kerry, a Merthyr boy and local lad, joined in the club in 2013/14 under the management of Garry Shephard and Danny Carter. The winger had previously spent time with Newport County and Bath City, after starting his career with Swansea City, in which he featured three times in their 2010/11 Championship campaign.
Since joining The Martyrs, Kerry has made a total of 221 competitive appearance, scoring 42 goals. He played a key role which saw the club reach the play-offs in 2013/14 and winning the league and achieving promotion from the Southern League Division One in 2014-15.
Kerry became a fans favourite at Penydarren Park due to his character and moments of brilliance shown on the pitch. Kerry was also a key member of the squad that stuck with the club through the financial difficulties in 2017, something fans will always be thankful for. Over the last two seasons, after suffering a significant ACL injury, Kerry has worked closely with Paul Michael and his staff to help his rehabilitation, as well as having spells at Cinderford Town in which he helped gain promotion back into the Southern League during the 2023/24 season.
Speaking on Kerry announcing his departure from the Martyrs after 221 appearances, Paul Michael said, “We wish Kerry all the very best for the future, he absolutely loves this club and community, and to play 221 games over a number of spells is no mean feat. Since I arrived at the club, Kerry had a significant injury and has fought back to get fit over the past couple of seasons, however, Kerry has made the decision to step back from this level of football. In that time his talent is still evident in every training session that he takes part in and he’s a great character amongst the squad.
We support his decision and hope he has a great day celebrating his final appearance Saturday, and we all wish him the very best in whatever his next move in football may be.”
Kerry also had the following message for the club and supporters after announcing his decision, “It has been an absolute honour to represent this fantastic club over the last 11 years, and I am proud to have memories that I will hold forever. I would like to thank all the managers, staff and players that I have worked with on this great journey. I’d also like to thank the amazing supporters that have supported us through the good times, and most importantly the tough times when we needed you the most – without you, there simply isn’t a Merthyr Town FC. All the best for the season and future,
Once a Martyr, Always a Martyr!”
Everyone at Merthyr Town Football Club would like to thank Kerry for his tremendous service to the club, and we wish him all the very best in his next move in football. We hope as many supporters as possible can give Kerry a deserved farewell on Saturday in his final appearance for the club, as we face Carlton Town at Penydarren Park.
