Merthyr Town Football Club are delighted to announce the permanent signing of Will Spiers from Cardiff City subject to FAW and National League approval. 

Will is a familiar face and name to Martyrs after having two loan spells at Penydarren Park during the 2025/26 National League North season. During his loan spells Will had a number stand-out performances, notably against Kidderminster Harriers and Hereford at home, and during his time with the Martyrs, he made a total of 22 appearances. 

A right-sided defender, Will can operate as a right-back or right wing-back and has developed through the Cardiff City academy since the age of 6, as well as featuring for the Bluebirds first team during the 2025/26 season in the Vertu Trophy, including playing and scoring in Cardiff’s 3-1 win over Arsenal U21’s. Will earned his first professional contract with the Bluebirds in July 2024. 

Having added Will to the squad ahead of the 2026/27 season, Paul Michael said "We’re delighted to be able to bring Will in permanently after a successful loan spell last season. Will’s ability to escape a press when we are in possession and his ability to defend 1v1 against athletic wingers is second to none. 

There are areas to develop and I’m really excited to work with him again as I believe there’s so much yet to come from Will as he nears his full potential. I’m very proud Will has chosen our environment to continue his development. Hopefully this is another one that excites our supporters and highlights our ambitions ahead of this season.”
