Merthyr Town Football Club are delighted to announce the permanent signing of defender, Jay Williams, following the conclusion of his contract at National League side, Sutton United.

Jay spent the 2024/25 season on-loan with the Martyrs from Sutton United and featured 33 times across the Southern League Premier South winning-campaign. The 22-year-old came through the academy system at Newport County before joining Fulham in the summer of 2019 as a 16-year-old. Jay, who is a centre-back and comfortable at full-back, spent just over four years with the Premier League side featuring over 50 times for their U18s and U21s and played a key role in their Premier League Cup winning campaign, before signing for then League Two side, Sutton United in January 2024.

Jay has also been capped 13 times at U16 through to U21 level for Wales, last featuring in the UEFA Under-21 European Championship Qualifiers in October 2023.

Speaking on securing the permanent signings of Jay, Paul Michael said, “Jay did so well for us on loan last season, he had brilliant runs in the team in his first proper season in senior football. Jay’s passing range and ability on the ball is very good for a centre back, he’s tactically very astute for a young player and his communication skills make him a leader on the pitch.

There are areas he is still developing as with all players but jay’s potential is there for all to and we are delighted to have him back at the club permanently.”
