Iwan John signs!

Merthyr Town are excited to announce the signing of promising striker, Iwan John ahead of the 2026/27 Enterprise National League North campaign, subject to the FAW Approval.

Iwan joins the Martyrs after an incredible season in the Ardal Leagues with Caerphilly Athletic, where he scored an incredible 51 goals across all competitions, 36 of which came in the league. Iwan’s goalscoring exploits played a key role in Caerphilly Athletic securing promotion to the JD Cymru South for the first time and winning the title.

Paul Michael praised Iwan and said, “Iwan has done brilliantly over the last couple of seasons and scoring 51 goals like he did last season is some going, regardless of the level. Iwan is an excellent finisher who scores all types of goals, his movement is good and we believe he can translate that form from lower levels into goals in the National League North.

It’s a great opportunity for Iwan, if he believes in himself then he can quickly become a fans favourite with our fantastic supporters. The last player we signed from the Ardal East was Cole Jarvis and in 18 months we moved him on to the EFL. Cawley Cox came from Step 5, and Ricardo Rees from Step 4, Ian Traylor came from FC Cwmaman and even Dai Webley came from Pontllanfraith, so let’s see how Iwan goes.

Our main priority this window is to bring in increased quality at either end of the pitch and ensure we bring in proven winners; however, we also don’t want to lose side of recruitment that has got us this far in identifying the talented local players from below and nurturing and developing them within our environment.”

On making the step into the National League North, Iwan said, “I’m proud to sign for Merthyr Town and I can’t wait to meet the lads and get started. I’d like to thank Paul for bringing me to the club and everyone who has helped me along the way in my journey so far.

I can’t wait to play in front of the fans, hopefully score some goals, and be part of a successful season for the club.”

Everyone at Merthyr Town Football Club would like to wish Iwan all the best during his time at Penydarren Park.
