Merthyr Town Football Club can confirm Adam Davies has departed the club after nine seasons at Penydarren Park. 

The Martyrs captain has called time on his career at the club due to an increase in work commitments. 

After joining the club in the summer of 2014, Davies has accumulated a total of 316 appearances for his hometown club, winning both the Southern League Division One title in 2014/15 and the Southern League Cup in the 2015/16 season, playing a key role in the Town defence on both occasions.

 

Last season, the full-back made 28 appearances during the campaign, as well as achieving a boyhood dream by leading the Martyrs to the First Round of the FA Cup for the first time in the club’s history since 2005.

After being appointed captain in January 2020, Davies has led by example season after season, maintaining professional standards both on and off the pitch. 

After his decision was announced, Davies said: “As a young boy growing up, standing on the terraces with my grampa and parents I find it hard to believe I’m looking back now having played 316 games for the club. It's something I’m extremely proud of, not because I’m a Merthyr boy, but it’s always been the team in my heart. 

“I’ve lived the dream of captaining my hometown club to the first round of the FA Cup, I’ve won a league title and a couple of cups along the way. I’ve been lucky enough to have some amazing moments at the club, and through the good and bad times, I’ve always given everything I have. I have to thank the fans because they make the club the special place it is and are the reason so many players love it here. 

“Your support throughout my time at the club has been second to none and I appreciate every single one of you. I wish the management and players nothing but success going forward and look forward to seeing you all again soon.”

Manager Paul Michael also added: “Adam has had a nasty bout of illness lately which has set him back, it may also be a result of burning the candle at both ends playing and committing to this level of football whilst also having a lot of work going on. 

“Adam feels that at this stage he cannot give the club the commitment that he would want to with everything going on in his life and we respect that decision. Adam has been an immense servant of Merthyr Town. Long before I arrived Adam was a huge part of the resurgence of Merthyr Town, he returned to lead the club with not a question asked after the mothball season and stuck by the club through tough times. Adam has helped the transition to the squad that we have today, he has given everything, for me, my predecessors and this football club. Adam Davies, thank you. 

“We will honour Adam’s time at this football club very soon in a fitting way that he deserves. Who could forget the cross to Lewis against Folkestone in the FA Cup fourth round Qualifier that helped take the club into the first round for the first time as Merthyr Town, a moment that typified Adam’s ability as a player to deliver quality from that right back position with almost every possession.”
