Merthyr Town Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of defender, Ben Margetson from Barry Town United - subject to FAW and National League approval. 

The centre-back arrives at Penydarren Park with strong experience across both the English and Welsh football system and adds further strength to the squad as the Martyrs prepare for the 2026/27 Enterprise National League North season. Margetson formerly of Swansea City, Cardiff City, Bromley, Sutton United and Kidderminster Harriers, joined Barry Town in 2024. Ben played a crucial role in an impressive third placed finish for Barry in the league, and he won the Players Player of the Year award at Jenner Park at the end of their MG Cup winning season in 2025/26. His impressive performances also saw Barry finish with the second-best defensive record in the JD Cymru Premier last season, only behind champions, The New Saints.

On securing the signing of the central defender, Paul Michael said, “I am delighted to be able to bring Ben in, we feel that he’s a great fit for Merthyr Town Football Club. He’s very good on the ball but also has a very good record in aerial duels, defending the box and in defending 1v1. We haven’t signed him for his bicycle kicks but that’s a bonus!

We’ve watched countless hours of games and footage throughout the last season and we feel that, of the players playing centre-back across South Wales and the West of England around our level, Ben is the best outside of professional clubs and what we already have. He’s an intelligent player who understands defending and has had a great grounding with Cardiff, Swansea and the Wales age-grade teams.

Bens at the perfect age for a centre back who’s been out playing senior football for a long time gaining that experience to add to that academy upbringing and I feel he’ll make a significant contribution to improving us this season.

I’m really pleased with the way things are progressing this summer, and I can’t wait to bring this team together in pre-season. There’s more work to be done but we’re putting a squad together determined to be better than last season”
