Anthony Hughes Memorial Tournament
30 June 2025

This was the second time Merthyr Town have hosted this wonderful event celebrating the life of a dedicated football and family man, as well as a true son of Merthyr.
Building on a fabulous first year, this years event was hosted over two days due to the numbers of teams.
Saturday saw the ladies arrive. Sunday it was the mens turn, with 8 teams participating. In all, 17 teams took part, with all games played in the true spirt of the tournament.
In all, a magnificent total of £3,667 was raised for Anthony's charity.
If anyone would like to make a further donation, please contact Mandy on 07714642867 or donate directly to the Velindre Cancer Centre referencing the Anthony Hughes tournament.
There are so many people to thank:
* Merthyr Town FC for providing the facilities free of charge...
* Europlas, DT contractors & RJM solicitors for their support...
* All those who officiated over two days - and who gave their time and expertise for free...
* The Hughes family, Tony Mahoney, Mel Jenkins and all for donations...
* Merthyr Police walking football team (hello hello hello!) and the FAW men's International team- not forgetting a further international element, with our friends from Polska (or - given it was a mens team - should that be Polski?!)...
* Merthyr Town Family Walking Football and the Celtic Nations Women's Walking football teams - who all baked (delicious!), help set up, ran the stands selling our goods and donated the prizes for the raffle and tombola...
* Andrew Chalis for his wonderful poem written for this event.
* Anthony's daughter Vicky - who sang her heart out in the evening and kept us all on the dance floor...
* And of course the wonderful club staff, for their attention and service - and putting up us over the two days (& especially a guest appearance by Sharon!!).
In short - thanks to all who attended, participated or served.
Some snaps of the events - and the man here.
