Injury in the pre-game warm up to Corey Shepherd, plus two in-game first half injuries to Tom Hillman and Ismael Yakubu significantly disrupted Dean Clarke's unchanged line-up after a positive opening forty-five minutes. With three other starters also sidelined the Martyrs resources were once again stretched to breaking point in the second period as a clinical display of finishing by Tommy Killick's side wrapped up the points in extremely wet conditions.
A quick reshuffle saw Morgan Clark drafted in as a late replacement for Shepherd, as Connor Davies was added to the substitutes bench. A cagey start saw both sides probing with no real threat before a nasty collision between Tom Hillman and a Poole defender after 23 minutes eventually lead to Kerry Morgan being introduced as a substitute just ten minutes later after Hillman was unable to continue.
A driving run from Cameron Keetch in the 36th minute set up Dylan Jones whose attempt from the edge of the area went narrowly over the crossbar. At the other end a Tony Lee is forced wide by Jamie Cogman before he manages to curl an effort at goal which is cleared off the line at full stretch by Ismail Yakubu, who subsequently injured himself in the process to be replaced by Toby Raison after 38 minutes.
After an even first period Jamie Cogman is required to make a smart save low to his right to preserve his clean sheet at half time.
Soon after the break the Martyrs were guilty of being careless in possession in the Poole half that resulted in a swift counter attack down their right flank, this provided Joshua Carmichael with the opportunity to send a ball across the six yard box that was met at the far post by Tony Lee who had the relatively simple task of diverting the path of the ball goal wards, only two minutes after the restart. Lee suffered an injury in his exuberant celebration with the Poole fans in the David Miles stand and required to be replaced but not before Cogman had tipped a strong effort from Poole's leading goalscorer onto the crossbar.
Cogman made another wonderful reflex save to push a Luke Holmes goalbound effort onto the post but the Merthyr goalkeeper was unable to do anything about a Dan Bartlett effort from 20 yards as it ricocheted off a defensive block to loop over a dis-paring Cogman to hit the back of the net in the 70th minute.
With the prolific Tony Lee replaced, the visitors created another outlet as Fletcher’s flick provided Josh Carmichael with a free header from close range to complete the scoring with twelve minutes remaining. In the dying stages of the game Luke Holmes hit the woodwork when his volley cannoned off the crossbar.
