Merthyr Town Football Club are delighted to announce the re-signing of former AFC Wimbledon and Newport County defender, Ismail Yakubu.
Centre-back Yakubu has seven seasons of experience at English Football League Two level. Nine years of his career were spent with Barnet, where he won the National League title in 2005. He was also a play-off winner with AFC Wimbledon, where he spent one season, helping them to promotion through the play-offs. Yakubu then spent four years at Rodney Parade, making a total of 139 appearances for the Exiles, scoring 15 goals.
After recovering from a serious cruciate ligament injury, he has been playing in the English non-league for Hemel Hayes & Yeading, Hempstead, Kingstonian and Woking, before a loan spell at The Martyrs in 2019.
Now, following a fine season with Penybont FC last term, Yakubu ventures back to Merthyr Town with the hope of continued form.
Speaking to www.merthyrtownfc.co.uk, the defender said; “I’m absolutely delighted to re-join the football club. I throughly enjoyed my spell here the season before last, so it was a no brainer to sign back when the opportunity came about.
“I’m looking forward to getting back out there and seeing some familiar faces, but most importantly relishing the challenges ahead and targeting a successful season with the club. “
Manager Dean Clarke added: “I'm thrilled to welcome someone of Yak's stature back to the football club. He is a great leader, but an even better sportsman. His experience will go a long way next season, especially when leading the younger players in the squad.
"He is an instrumental player, who will have a big role to play for us going forward. "
