Ahead of tomorrow's Southern League Pitching In Premier game against Harrow Borough, the Martyrs will be wearing special warm-up tops in support of former secretary, board member and lifelong fan, Anthony Hughes.

Anthony is currently battling long term illness, and everyone at Merthyr Town Football Club wants to ensure Anthony that we are with him every step of the way. Anthony has undertaken multiple roles at the club, as well as being a lifelong supporter, as both Merthyr Town FC & Merthyr Tydfil FC.

A number of the current first team squad, including Adam Davies, Matthew Harris & Kerry Morgan, have all worked alongside Anthony during his years at the club. Ahead of the wearing of the warmup tops, they said: “He has been such a huge part of the football club and is liked and loved by so many.

"His passion for the club still remains as strong as ever and its the least we could do to show our support to Anthony. He is one of the good guys in football and a little gesture like this will hopefully put a smile on his face! We are with you and fully behind you as a club. Stay strong Ant. We hope to see you at a game very soon.”

First Team Manager, Dean Clarke, spent the majority of his playing days at the club while Anthony was club secretary. Clarke added: “Ant’s been a big figure around the club in my time, one of the real good guys, and a proper football man that loves our club. He’s been great with me over the years, although I might of caused him a lot of paperwork over the years as a player, and he’s always been there on the phone since I’ve taken over in the management position, which I will always be great full for. Keep fighting ‘Henry’!”

Former Club captain, Steve Williams, also spent a number of years with Anthony at the club, and is a close friend off the field. Steve could not speak highly enough of Anthony by saying: “Ant really is one of the nicest men in the game. He’s been a friend of the family for years and we all can’t wait to have back around the place soon. We are all behind him and he knows that. Top man Ant!”

The Club would also like to thank former player and manager, Garry Shephard of LCL Wear, for the donation of the one-off warm up tops ahead of todays game. Garry is also a close friend of Anthony and wanted to show his support as much as he possibly could.

Everyone at Merthyr Town Football Club would like to send our best wishes to Anthony and his family during this time, and we look forward to welcoming Anthony back to a game soon - Keep fighting Ant!
