PAUL MICHAEL | IT'S IMPORTANT TO TRY TO KEEP THE MOMENTUM
15 August 2023
Manager Paul Michael wants his Merthyr Town side to keep their performance levels high and continue to focus as they kick off their first-midweek fixture of the season.
The Martyrs host Tiverton Town on Tuesday night (7.45pm) on the back of an impressive away victory against Beaconsfield on Saturday afternoon.
A hat-trick from Frazer Thomas and a brace from Ricardo Rees rounded off a dominant performance for Town, which left them sitting at the top of the Southern League Premier South table over the weekend.
After that secured a morale-boosting away win for the fans and the club, Michael now wants his side to build on the positives of their showing on Saturday.
“It’s important to try to keep the momentum going as that’s what builds confidence,” said Michael.
“We all know confidence plays a huge role in sport and if you can put a string of positive results together then confidence really builds. But, it’s a new game and come Tuesday night, nothing that has happened in the first two games for either team counts for anything.
“I expect Tiverton to be coming determined and hungry for their first win. You can see from a couple of their interviews that they’ve been frustrated with a few things and they look determined to put things right. They’ve also started with a couple of really tough fixtures so supporters shouldn’t get too carried away with early results.
“Tiverton will be big, physical and well organised with some very talented players but we will just be concentrating on being better than we have been in our first two games and see where that takes us.
“We’re not getting carried away with the first two wins at all, it’s been a great start, but we’re just looking at what we think we need to do specifically to negate Tivy and what we can do better from our previous performance.
“The fans have been superb throughout the campaign so far. It has been great away support and an excellent first gate against Dorchester when it was a real club effort to get the win.
"The supporters really helped lift us in that one and we need everyone to drag as many along as possible and get behind in the same way or better to drive us on once again on Tuesday.”
