The Martyrs face Chesham United on Tuesday evening in the last midweek home game of the season.
The match was originally due to be played in March when then Beast from the East struck resulting in the match being postponed due to the snow. The Martyrs travelled to Chesham in November, and everyone will remember the scoreline. The match was the first played following the announcement of financial issues which meant the first team did not travel. A mixture of the club’s development team and a few staff members played the game, losing 13-1. Jacob Flower scored the Martyrs only goal on the day, and Ed Hewitson was man of the match and made national news with his heroic display. The team of the day has been made into a shirt (which you can still buy from the club shop) and will go down in the club’s history as the team that kept the club going.
Turning to the present time, the Martyrs will go into the match with confidence after a battling 0-0 draw at Kings Lynn Town on Saturday. Ed Hewitson made a number of fine saves, and Owain Jones and Harry Franklin could have even won the game forcing Lynn keeper Street to make a fine double save. Ashley Evans, Scott Tancock and Ryan Prosser should be available after missing Saturday’s game.
The visitors lost at league leaders Hereford on Saturday, and will need to make another long journey on Tuesday. They have won 8 of their 20 matches on the road and sit in 8th position in the league table winning 2 of their last 6 matches. Jefferson Louis is the top scorer, having also played for Banbury this season.
